5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before the World Gets Hold of Your Day
Most days begin the same way:
an alarm, a phone screen, a flood of messages,
news, requests, responsibilities. Before we’ve even taken a full breath,
the world is already telling us who to be, what to worry about, and where to place our attention.
And attention is everything.
Where we place it quietly shapes the entire architecture of our day—
what we notice, what we feel, and what we believe our life is made of.
If we don’t choose it intentionally, it gets chosen for us.
That’s why I like to begin my day with a few simple questions before the noise begins.
Not a complicated routine or a perfectly curated morning ritual—just a moment to orient myself toward what actually matters.
These five questions act like a compass.
They pull me out of autopilot and back into authorship.
Instead of reacting to the day, I get to shape it.
They help me notice what’s already good, connect with what’s meaningful, clear away unnecessary noise,
remember my body, and invite a little beauty into the ordinary moments of life.
Five small questions.
But when you ask them consistently, they have a quiet way of changing everything.
THE FIVE DAILY QUESTIONS:
1. What am I grateful for today?
Once I get going with this—it really starts to turn on.
Clean drinking water, the feel of my favorite bedsheets, the daffodils starting to peek through the dirty snow, the sound of my daughter’s laugh, challenge yourself to think of as many as you can. The things you have, but didn’t take the time to notice today.
2. Who am I connecting with today?
Somedays, this is meeting up for a walk in the sunshine, other days it’s a quick text to someone I love and telling them a specific thing I love about them or recalling a funny memory or inside joke. Somedays when I’ve been ON at work all day, listening to people, it’s allowing myself time to listen to music with no words, and just connect with myself.
3. What am I letting go of today?
This is probably the most important on the list—are you letting go of perfection? A task on your to-do, that really does’t have to happen today? An obligation that is draining you and you took on out of guilt? Let go of as much as you can, we tend to clutter our days and our energetic fields with a lot of noise, which creates interference and exhaustion for the things we actually to want to do.
4. How am I moving my body today?
It’s so easy for this to be the first thing that we skip on the days we need it the most. I like to use the concept of “just enough” here. Maybe I don’t have time for my desired 3 – 5 mile hike, so can I crank up some music and have a dance party for one in my living room? How many short walks can I squeeze in while running errands? Don’t underestimate the power of arm swings and gentle squats in the office. We don’t have to wear spandex and a sport bra and go for a run to get the benefit of movement.
5. What BEAUTY, am I either creating, cultivating or inviting in today?
And this question is the inspiration for the whole experiment. How can you allow yourself a bit of pleasure in your immediate environment? Is it placing a pretty vase with a single flower on your desk? Is it taping your favorite quote above your computer so you can remember the sentiment? Is it wearing cashmere so you feel bougie and beautiful all day?
